Often a website has a webmaster. Their names, or at least their nicknames, are often listed on the website. Thus, it is clear that this is a fairly important job. The question, however, is what the webmaster actually does. Why is the webmaster so important to the website?
To find out, we need to look at what they do. This is not as simple as we might think. The main thing, of course, is to ensure that the website functions smoothly and is error-free. This is because, due to frequent updates and the threat of hackers, something goes wrong every day. This is especially true if the person doing this kind of work does not understand computers and code in general.
Another concern of theirs is that the site content is fit for purpose. This is especially true for sites that allow multiple people to contribute articles and comments. First and foremost, they want to make sure that laws are not violated, for example, by promoting a particular group or by pornographic posts on a children\’s site (in fact, this happens more often than we would like in unmoderated discussions). This is not just about removing inappropriate content, but also about ensuring that content does not become outdated. This is especially relevant for corporate sites where new products are constantly being added and old ones discontinued.
Clearly, this is no easy task. Certainly, if the site is small and has few visitors, it is not so bad, and this job can easily be done by one person. However, it is a different story for large sites, such as those of multinational corporations, for example. Therefore, they hire even more people so that there is always someone available to respond.
Believe me, the Internet is not as safe as we think. Those who run websites often have their hands full. Therefore, we should not look upon this profession with disdain. For it certainly does not deserve it.
